Engineering Performance for Patient Care

Jan 27, 2026 |

Hermanson is delivering the full mechanical scope for the Jefferson Healthcare South Campus Replacement Project, a transformative expansion designed to modernize services and enhance patient care for the Port Townsend community.

The project replaces a 35,000-square-foot section of the hospital, originally built in 1965, with 53,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space for medical offices, radiology, and kitchen/dining services. Working alongside Abbott Construction in a Design-Build partnership with ZGF Architects, Hermanson’s role began early in pre-construction, where we provided essential input on HVAC systems, material procurement, constructability, and operational efficiencies.

A Story of Collaboration

Hermanson was selected for our track record in healthcare projects, as well as our ability to collaborate with owners, contractors, and designers to solve complex challenges before they impact the jobsite. From the earliest design meetings, our team partnered closely with Abbott Construction, ZGF Architects, and hospital representatives to align the mechanical scope with Jefferson Healthcare’s priorities: patient comfort, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

Key program areas received special attention, including:
• Kitchen and Dining – Full installation of all mechanical systems serving the kitchen, including hoods and exhaust.
• Operating Room Suite – Installation of hyper-filtration grade systems with filtered grids to push clean air into surgical spaces, supporting optimal infection control.

Precision Execution in a Live Healthcare Environment

Working within an active hospital meant zero tolerance for interruptions to patient care. Led by Carrie Sanchez, Account Executive / Senior Project Manager, our team applied a Critical Environments approach that emphasized:

• Advanced Planning – Detailed scheduling to coordinate construction activities with hospital operations.
• Prefabrication – Off-site assembly to reduce noise, dust, and time spent in sensitive areas.
• BIM Coordination – 3D modeling to resolve conflicts and ensure a seamless fit for all systems.

Managing lead times and supply chain challenges was another critical success factor. By locking in procurement early, we maintained budget certainty and avoided delays, all while meeting Washington’s Clean Energy Transformation Act standards for energy efficiency.

The Hermanson Edge: Healthcare Expertise, Local Impact

This project reflects Hermanson’s purpose: We build trusting relationships and deliver inspired results. By combining healthcare construction expertise with proactive communication and problem-solving, we helped deliver a facility that will serve the community for decades to come. Our commitment to using local labor and cost-effective, sustainable solutions ensured that project benefits extend beyond the hospital walls.

With construction on track and mechanical systems tailored for performance and longevity, the Jefferson Healthcare South Campus Replacement Project stands as another example of Hermanson’s role as a trusted partner in building critical community infrastructure.
