It has been twenty years since Van Staten first joined Hermanson as a Plumber’s Helper, but he has since worked on many complex projects as Lead Plumber and now Foreman and has become a vital part of the Hermanson team.

“I enjoy most the feeling of accomplishment from having been involved in complex mechanical system project—from design, construction, to close out,” says Van, “I am fascinated by all the tools, materials, and machinery involved in making a project come together.”

Van experienced firsthand many of Hermanson’s recent fabrication shop upgrades during the early days of the COVID crisis.  He was on the team that worked to fabricate commissioned hand washing stations for use at jobsites, healthcare facilities, office buildings, retail and manufacturing sites, and temporary quarantine shelters across the Puget Sound area and Oregon.

Typically, however, you will find Van out on a jobsite.  He is currently coordinating the plumbing crews at the Northgate Mall Phase 2 and the Muckleshoot Casino bar projects while preparing for the upcoming Facebook Block 24 project to begin.

As a Plumbing Foreman, Van oversees the coordinating of material, manpower, and the installation of plumbing and pipefitting systems as well as the organization of subcontractors on full mechanical projects. His other responsibilities include scheduling and tracking, forecasting completion, and estimating small jobs.

Van places emphasis on safety at his jobsites and believes that the most important aspect of his job is completing a job safely for all parties involved.  “It is important to me to create systems that are code compliant,” notes Van, “Because safety on a project extends long after we have gathered up our tools.”

Hermanson’s ability to retain the feel of a family owned business while experience exponential growth appeals to Van.  It is one of the reasons he has chosen to build his career here.  “I enjoy the sense of family and the support I have received from Hermanson employees and my fellow tradesmen,” says Van.

Congratulations, Van, for being Hermanson’s featured Foreman for August 2020.
