This month, Hermanson is proud to spotlight Bill Miller, General Foreman of our Plumbing Fabrication Shop. With nearly two decades of experience, a passion for mentorship, and a love for problem-solving, Bill is a key leader and a valued member of our team.
Bill’s journey began in Stockton, California. After moving to Montesano, Washington in 1998, he graduated from Montesano High School. His early introduction to the trades came through jobs at Ace Hardware and Familian Plumbing Supply, which eventually led to a role with a mechanical contractor.
“One day, the owner came up to me and asked why I hadn’t joined the trades yet,” Bill recalls. “The next day, I signed up for the apprenticeship. It changed everything.”
Since joining the Seattle Area Plumbers and Pipe Fitters in 2005, Bill has embraced the challenge of solving problems and creating solutions. “I enjoy the problem-solving that my job provides. I like doing something new every day and working with different people,” he says.
Hermanson’s Purpose and Core Values are something Bill strives to uphold every day.
“Whether I’m at work, at home, or on the ballfields, I always seem to be the one thinking about safety,” he says. “From teaching my son to wear safety glasses in the garage to reminding kids at the fields to watch their surroundings when swinging bats or climbing fences, safety is always on my mind.”
One of the most memorable projects Bill has worked on is the Muckleshoot Casino and Resort expansion. “It was equally challenging and fun,” he says. “The expectations were high and the schedule was tight, but it was rewarding to meet those goals.”
When asked what advice he would give to someone entering the industry, Bill shared, "Work hard, listen, and learn as much as you can."
“This applies not just to your trade but to others as well. I’ve learned a lot by paying attention to how other trades work and understanding what it takes to do their jobs. For example, on the Tacoma General Hospital Fire Damper project, I learned about the access requirements for fire dampers. In the past, I might have run piping directly under them because it looked like a clear path, but now I understand the importance of leaving space.”
Outside of work, Bill has spent the past three years coaching Kent Little League and currently serves on the board of directors. When he isn’t spending time at the baseball field, Bill enjoys tinkering in his garage, fixing his kids’ toys, and doing small woodworking projects.
Bill and his wife, Samantha, have three children—Charlie (8), James (5), and Josephine (4)—and a dog named Brewser.
Thank you, Bill, for being a part of the Hermanson family!
