Foreman Focus | Erik Oakley, Sheet Metal Journeyman

Ahead of the holidays, we are featuring our November Foreman Focus Feature a bit early.

Today, we are excited to celebrate Sheet Metal Journeyman Erik Oakley. Erik was born and raised in Port Orchard, where he still lives today. He grew up alongside three brothers who all went on to work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

When he is not at work, Erik enjoys hunting, especially ducks and geese, and spending time with his blue heeler, Scout.

Erik’s path into the sheet metal trade began right out of high school. He joined an HVAC manufacturing company, fabricating plenums, filter boxes, and other sheet metal components before moving into the sheet metal apprenticeship. That early experience showed him how much he enjoyed a career that offers constant learning and hands-on problem-solving.

“My favorite part of this industry is constantly gaining new knowledge,” he says. “Every job presents something different, and I enjoy being hands-on with challenges that push my abilities.”

At Hermanson, Erik supports shop operations by fabricating HOT jobs, contributing to shop improvements, and translating shop drawings into accurate, buildable products. He is known for approaching work with a logical, methodical process while still offering creative solutions when needed.

One project that stands out for him involved building components for a diamond foundry.“It reminded me just how diverse Hermanson’s work really is,” Erik says. “We get to be part of so many interesting projects.”

When asked what he enjoys about working at Hermanson, Erik points to the culture.“I love that Hermanson has a very family-friendly atmosphere,” he says. “Everyone is always willing to assist you in any way they can. I always try to do my part by being inviting and helping people who may need help.”

His advice to others in the trades reflects that same mindset.

“Never stop trying to learn new things. Keep improving your own skills and treat others with respect. We should never stop learning how to improve upon our abilities.”

Thank you, Erik, for your dedication and contributions! We are lucky to have you!
