With more than 35 years of experience, Oregon-based Fitting Foreman Steve Carton is a consummate problem-solver, always making sure projects are moving forward and humming along.

Steve grew up in Grants Pass, OR, about 30 miles northwest of Medford. After high school, he moved to California, where he landed his first job. Steve started installing passive solar energy systems before becoming interested in pipefitting and what the career could offer. 

One of Steve’s favorite aspects of working in the mechanical construction industry is that it’s constantly changing and always challenging. When it comes to working, he especially likes taking on Design-Build projects, and the bigger, the better.

“I like how large Hermanson is and how I can be a part of this bigger team,” said Steve. “We can bid on larger projects which makes for more interesting work.”

Steve has recently been working at the Canby High School site in Oregon, helping install seven boilers over the past summer.

In his free time, Steve enjoys spending time with his three kids and his wife Patricia (married 19 years). Their youngest son recently completed his apprenticeship and has also joined the trade. Steve and Patricia enjoy making wine at home together. In addition to winemaking, he’s also a homebrewer.

“If I’m going to drink this stuff, I might as well learn to make it,” shared Steve. His specialties include pinot noir for wine and his oatmeal chocolate stout beer. 

When it comes to advice, Steve says, “I can’t stress enough the importance of finding balance between your work and your personal life. Sometimes you have to take a moment for a deep breath.”
